Asking a local about his favorite beach in Santorini is like asking any parent about his favorite child. It’s impossible to decide which is best and fortunately you don’t have to. Santorini is a relatively small island and with a nice rental car you can see almost all of it in a few short days.
One of the most famous beaches is the Red beach. For some this beach is like a red headed woman, full of passion and beauty!
The red beach is fairly easy to reach. It’s a 20 minute ride from Fira (11.5km) and you have to make a left once you reach Acrotiri. There is a parking lot at the end of the road where you leave the car and start on foot. It’s only a couple of minutes from the car to the beach.
There a beautiful spot on the cliff from which you can take wonderful photos of the beach before your start climbing down towards the beach.
This is not a large beach so don’t go looking for seclusion there. It can actually get really crowded in the summer but it’s an organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas for you to rent.
The scenery is like a Martian field and it will definitely occupy some room in your camera’s memory card. A passionate and wild beautiful scenery, the result of nature’s force, it’s enough to leave you in awe!
If you are a fan of warm waters and interesting sea floors this is definitely a must see. Even at the end of September the waters are relatively warm for late summer/early fall swims.
Take your equipment with you and enjoy a couple of hours immersed into Santorini’s magnificent sea world. The volcanic formations are a thing to see for sure!
After all these physical activity you will definitely get hungry! Thankfully, there are many nice choices to eat great food near the red beach. Dive into the delicious and heartwarming Greek food and drink some of the great wines Santorini has to offer. That’s the way to a great time!
There are several hiking trails that start from the red beach. If you are a fan of nature and don’t really like the crowds found on the red beach, after taking the obligatory photo, find the trail that leads to Kambia beach. Just a 20 minute walk and you will reach one of the most hidden but beautiful beaches on the island.
